TRANEL'S CAFETERIA. The building in which the cafeteria was located was constructed in 1900 as the home of the SECOND NATIONAL BANK. It had been reopened by the Kretz family as a cafeteria and then purchased by Zeno Tranel in the early 1950s.

Tranel's was remembered for its salmon croquettes, gravy chicken, roast been hash and prime rib for 75 cents a slice on Sundays. The cafeteria catered, hosted wedding receptions and religious events, and served as the meeting place for the Noon Lions Club. Zeno cooked, his wife served as bookkeeper and cashier, and family members washed dishes and cleared tables.

The building was demolished as part of URBAN RENEWAL.

The 1955 through 1968 Dubuque City Directory listed 598 Main.
