SASS, Charles. (Guttenberg, IA, 1858--Berlin, Germany, Aug. 10,1926). Sass came to Dubuque around 1876 and worked in a local newspaper managed by Henry B. GNIFFKE. Later the operator of a book, musical instrument and stationery store, he was elected the city treasurer of Dubuque in 1890. (1) He closed his business in May, 1892. (2)
Sass later resigned to become cashier of the PIONEER SAVINGS BANK AND TRUST COMPANY. He held this office until July 1925, when he was elected president of the same institution. (3)
In 1910 Sass was active in German-American anti-prohibition efforts in Iowa. In 1910 Dubuque representatives met with others in Cedar Rapids to form the German-American Citizens' Liberty League of Iowa. Among the permanent officers elected were Max Rathberger, vice-president and representative organizer of the third district and Charles Sass, treasurer. (4) He was prominent in activities of the Saengerbund and was re-elected treasurer of the Northwestern Saengerbund in Peoria in 1926 after holding the office for eleven years. (5) He was also treasurer of the DUBUQUE SAENGERBUND. (6)
