KRANTZ, Florene
Krantz, Florene. (Marengo, IA, Mar. 17, 1900--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 13, 1996). Krantz, a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and the University of Chicago, began her teaching career in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT in 1925 and served as the head of the Commercial Department at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL for twenty-five years before her retirement came in 1965. (1)
Organizing a DHS Business Club, she arranged "on-the-job training" for her students. (2) Remembered for her willingness to devote long hours outside of school to helping students succeed, she was designated national runner-up as the most Outstanding Senior Citizen of the United States by the Day's Inn Foundation. She encouraged her students to correspond with students of the same age in Europe by supplying names and addresses. (3)
Krantz served as the state representative for the University of Chicago Alumni Association and was credited with encouraging Jay BERWANGER to attend college where he became an all-American football player and the first HEISMAN TROPHY winner. She was a local member of the social studies group of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
After retiring in 1965, Krantz lived until 1988 in Florida where she was a volunteer at the Highlands General Hospital for fifteen years and a member of the board of directors of the Highland Community Concert Association. In 1984 when it was learned that she was returning to Dubuque for a visit, a "Welcome Home Florene Krantz" announcement was placed in the Telegraph Herald. In 1985 a similar announcement of her birthday appeared.
