HOFFMANN, Mathias M. Sr. (Dubuque, IA, May 28, 1857--Mar., 1925). After receiving his formal education, Hoffmann learned the trade of cabinet making, working with several different companies until he had thoroughly mastered the business and began work on his own. He later formed a partnership with S. Korman in the undertaking business. Hoffmann carried on operations along that line for five years as Hoffmann & Korman before buying out the business in 1882. Hoffmann saw the business continued by his son, Rt. Rev. Mathias M. HOFFMANN. The company became HOFFMANN-SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATION SERVICE.

Beginning in 1880 Hoffmann served twelve years as the county coroner. He held financial interest in the DUBUQUE STAMPING AND ENAMELING WORKS and the KEY CITY LAND AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY and in 1892 founded the DUBUQUE INVESTMENT CO. He was one of the organizers and president for twelve years of the DUBUQUE CASKET COMPANY and was president of the Dubuque Embalming Company and the Iowa State Undertakers' Association.
