HOERMANN, Charles S. (Dubuque, IA, Feb. 21, 1877--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 29, 1943). The son of Eugene H. HOERMANN, Charles was educated in the schools of Helena, Montana and was a student of the Helena Business College. He returned to Dubuque and worked for the Berg & Winall Printing Company for five years before serving in the SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.

Following his return to Dubuque, Hoermann was a partner in the ENTERPRISE PRINTING CO. of Dubuque for two and one-half years. In 1905 Hoermann established HOERMANN PRESS (THE) in Dubuque and operated it for one year from the BANK AND INSURANCE BUILDING. The company was moved to 8th and Locust STREETS until 1926 when it was relocated to 346 8th Avenue. In 1943 it was located at 498 Main Street.

When the FEDERAL DISCOUNT CORPORATION was organized in 1921 he was chosen vice-president and director and served in those positions until his death. He was formerly a director of the FEDERAL BANK AND TRUST COMPANY.

Hoermann's associations included his role as Department Commander of Iowa, Spanish-American War Veterans of America (1908-1910). (2) He was the chairman for eighteen years of the Dubuque Good Government League and a charter member of the Dubuque Kiwanis Club when it was founded in 1920, its president from 1921-1922 and lieutenant governor of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa district of Division 6 of Kiwanis International. He was a member of the board of directors of the DUBUQUE BOYS' CLUB; past president of the Chamber of Commerce (1928); chairman of the Dubuque Chapter of the American Red Cross (1937-1938) and chairman of its disaster committee (1936-1939). He served several years as chairman of the Dubuque Safety Council.
