COATES, Frank. (Dubuque, IA, July 22, 1870--Dubuque, IA, Oct. 31, 1939). The son of William COATES, Frank Coates was the grandson of John Robert WALLER, Sr.. After attending public school in Dubuque, he entered Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Coates was involved in various businesses until he became twenty. He then began a real-estate business as a partner of Edward W. Duncan in the firm of Duncan & Coates. (1)
On September 1, 1894 Coates purchased the business and began a partnership with Frederick C. ROBINSON in the firm of Coates and Roninson. He was active in the Iowa State Federation of Insurance Agents and the National Federation of Insurance Agents. For many years he was a member of the executive committee of the state organization and was one of its past presidents.
In 1900, Coates was one of the founding members of the NUTWOOD DRIVING CLUB. He was a member of the DUBUQUE GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, DUBUQUE TRAVELING AND BUSINESS MEN'S ASSOCIATION, and served on the executive board of the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE beginning in 1920. (2)
