WIENEKE, J. C.
Wieneke, J. C. (Linn County, IA, Oct. 1, 1878--Dubuque, IA, Mar. 6, 1954). Ordained in 1903, Wieneke became pastor of HOLY GHOST CATHOLIC CHURCH in Dubuque on January 25, 1939. He became active in the Boy Scout movement only four years after the program began in the United States and was one of the designers of the National Committee for Catholic Scouting.
Wieneke was in great demand as a speaker on scouting and wrote many pamphlets on scouting for Catholics. One of the first Boy Scout camp retreats ever held in the United States was organized in 1932 through his efforts. For his work, Wieneke received the Silver Beaver, the highest award which can be given to a layman interested in scouting.
