WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL
WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL. A resolution adopted on April 27, 1921, by the board of education of the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT called for the construction of two new junior high schools.
The proposition to issue bonds for the construction was passed by a majority of 54 percent on June 3, 1921. On April 22, 1922, the Gasses site on the corner of Grandview Avenue and Dodge Street was chosen for the location of one of the schools. Construction proceeded, and Washington Junior High School was opened the second semester of the 1922-1923 academic year.
In 1972 Washington Junior High School became the 18th junior high in Iowa to achieve accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
The school was renamed in the 1990s when middle schools were created to address overcrowding at the elementary level.
The Washington Middle School Addition was a 5,500 two-story addition that included space that could be used as both lunchroom space and activities space. The project also included installation of air conditioning to the new lunchroom and activity space as well as the existing cafeteria. The second story of the additional was planned for a future band room and provided indoor stage access. (1)
In 2022 an attempt was made to have Washington Middle School torn down. It was to be replaced by a new building set further back from the street. The vote on the bond issue failed.
