V. A. S. FRATERNITY. An exclusively Iowa organization, V. A. S. Fraternity in 1880 had fifty-three "subordinate collegil," a branch of which--Hawkeye Collegium--was organized in Dubuque on September 30, 1880. The group began with forty-two charter members. There were 1,200 across the state.

The organization stated that its membership was growing "with proper care, none being received who are not good men physically as well as morally." Officers of the group included: William Paggett ALLEN, rector; S. M. Fowler, vice rector; A. J. Schlager, chaplain; Hugh CORRANCE, scribe; George B. Rand, questor; A. E. Peck, usher; Evan E. JONES, speculator; G. G. Moser, A. L. Clark, and Jason Martin, curators; and Edward A. GUILBERT, grand representative.
