USS AIRDALES. During the first years of WORLD WAR II, United States Naval Aviators were known by many names. "Brown-Shoe-Aviator" referred to the brown oxfords worn only by the naval aviators; 'regular' naval officers wore black shoes.
The use of 'Airedale' to describe naval aviators, flight crewmen and later, any flight deck crewmen who were part of carrier operations, appears as early as 1940.
