TAYLOR, John Sr. (Tuscaloosa, AL-- ). An academic scholarship to the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE brought Taylor to Dubuque in 1966. He graduated with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics and served in Company C, 682nd Combat Engineers, Iowa Army National Guard from 1971 to 1977.

Taylor retired after fourteen years at the JOHN DEERE DUBUQUE WORKS and twenty-three years with the State of Iowa Department of Workforce Development. In 2011 he was named the first African American commander of American Legion Post 6 to hold the office in the 93-year history of the organization. As the commander, he attended as many military wakes, funerals and graveside services as possible. He also worked to be sure the needs of the service men and women were met and encouraged recruitment of younger members to the organization. During the summer of 2011 he also became an ordained Baptist minister.
