STEFFEN, Don Carl. (Dubuque, IA, Feb. 26, 1928--Middletown, VA, Feb. 22, 1995). Steffen's photographs have appeared as covers or within articles in such magazines as Life, Time, Sports Illustrated, Saturday Evening Post and Business Week.

Steffen was given his first camera by his grandmother while he was a student at Washington Junior High School (later WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL). A graduate of the University of Iowa Journalism School, Steffen first had a photo published by Time in 1960. As a result of his work, Steffen was locked up, asked to man a mortar, and collected $10,000 for photographs showing the arrest of Russian sailors in Ghana.
