SIMON, Stephen (Dubuque, IA, Aug. 8, 1949-- ). In 2004 Stephen Simon, veteran of the VIETNAM WAR, was presented seven medals he had earned during his tour of duty in Vietnam. The presenter was none other than Iowa's long-term United States Senator Tom Harkin. (1) Simon was one of the participants on the HONOR FLIGHT DUBUQUE to Washington, D. C. in 2023.

Simon had a long distinguished history of working in the area of law enforcement in Dubuque County. In addition to serving the cities of Epworth and New Vienna, he was the chief of police in Sherrill for ten years. He continued to offer security protection at the Farley Speedway and then at the DUBUQUE COUNTY FAIR for ten years.

Stephen married Deborah Lex Travis at SACRED HEART CHURCH in Dubuque on July 23, 1971. She passed away on March 3, 2017. They had four children and together operated SIMON'S PAWN SHOP, the only one of its kind at the time, in Dubuque for a total of ten years.
