SCHERR, Theodore J.
SCHERR, Theodore J. (Dubuque, IA, Mar. 4, 1944--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 18, 2009). General Manager, Dubuque ThunderBirds. Scherr was employed many years as a truck driver for Briggs & Dohrn Transfer and then H & W MOTOR EXPRESS. He was a member of Teamsters Local 421 for which he served as a union steward. Scherr retired in 1999.
It was his devotion to Dubuque hockey for which he will be most remembered. For thirty years he was active with youth hockey, DUBUQUE FIGHTING SAINTS and the DUBUQUE THUNDERBIRDS. He gave hours to organizing, coaching, and supporting the players and often housed them. He served as the president of the Dubuque Fighting Saints and was one of the important members of the "Save Our Saints" effort which tried to keep the Saints in Dubuque during difficult economic times in the city during the mid-1980s.
When the Saints were sold to eastern investors, Scherr led the effort with Ken Gaber and others to replace them when the Saints moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2001. The Dubuque ThunderBirds were established before the Saints left Dubuque and began play in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League in 2001.
