Athletics-Hockey. The interest in ice hockey has made the sport the pastime of choice for people whether as a spectator or participant. The first USHL team in Dubuque were the DUBUQUE FIGHTING SAINTS. They left Dubuque in 2001. In 2009 the United States Hockey League announced it was adding a team in Dubuque for the 2010-11 season.

The league announcement marked the return of the USHL to the city. The franchise was run by the ownership group Northern Lights Hockey. The group's principal owner, Philip Falcone, is also a part owner of the NHL's Minnesota Wild. In November 2009, the new team did not yet have a name. It was announced, however, that the team would play at the Mystique Ice Center, a new 3,200-seat arena that broke ground in November.
