SCHERR, Franz. (Germany, 1830--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 4, 1909). After receiving a practical education in the German schools, Scherr learned the intricacies of the brewing business. After coming to Dubuque, he was joined Titus SCHMID in the Schmid & Scheer brewery beginning in 1855. He sold his interest and in 1864 traveled to Cassville, Wisconsin and constructed the Schmitz & Scherr Brewery.

In 1877 Scherr sold his company and moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he continued in the same line of business. Four years later he returned to Dubuque and was, for the greater part of the remainder of his life, engaged in retail mercantile pursuits.
