O'BRIEN, Byrne A.

O'BRIEN, Byrne A. (Dubuque, IA--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 25, 1971). A retired police captain and brother of Robert O'BRIEN, Byrne was a graduate of LORAS ACADEMY and LORAS COLLEGE before joining the DUBUQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT on August 16, 1937. He was promoted to detective in 1953 and became captain in 1957 and attended the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy. He was a strong advocate for the establishment of a detective investigation team. Byrne retired on August 28, 1968. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers, a member of the F.B.I. National Academy Associates and the Iowa Chapter F.B.I. National Academy Associates and was a past president of the Dubuque Policemen's Association.

Active in the community, Byrne was a member of Dubuque Council No. 510 Knights of Columbus and served as grand knight of the council in 1963. He was a member of Duborg Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and was a past district deputy of the Iowa Knights of Columbus. Seeing service in WORLD WAR II, Byrne was a member of the Dubuque Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 508 and was a past commander of Amvets Post No. 3 of Dubuque. He was a past commander of the Dubuque American Legion and served as the Iowa district commander of the American Legion in 1966. He was a member of Voiture 632 Hommes et 8 Chevaux of the American Legion.

O'Brien was a counselor for the Northeast District Boy Scouts of America, a member of the DUBUQUE SHOOTING SOCIETY, and a past flood disaster chairman of the Dubuque Red Cross.

In 1968 he was appointed director of security at LORAS COLLEGE where he organized the security's program.
