MEDAL OF HONOR.
First presented in 1863, the Medal of Honor is the highest military award for bravery that can be given a member of the United States armed forces. The award, given by the president in the name of the Congress, is presented to an individual who, while serving in the armed forces, distinguishes himself/herself at the risk of life and beyond the call of duty. Dubuque residents who have received this award include James HILL, George W. HEALEY and Francis J. HERRON, Orson W. BENNETT, James KEPHART. Buried in LINWOOD CEMETERY is Paul F. STRAUB.
