MARTIN LUTHER HOME FOR THE AGED
MARTIN LUTHER HOME FOR THE AGED. On February 13, 1950 the National Lutheran Council churches of Dubuque began a formal fundraising drive to raise money to establish a Martin Luther Home for the Aged in Dubuque. Participating congregations included HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, ST. MARK LUTHERAN CHURCH, ST. MATTHEW LUTHERAN CHURCH, and ST. PETER'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH. (1) Canvassers would attempt to reach the more than 1,900 members. represented by the council.
Located at 340 Wartburg Place, the home was dedicated on June 10, 1951. At the time of the dedication, there were six residents. The home had a capacity of eighteen. (2) In the same year, a program to reduce the home's financial indebtedness of $65,000 was started. In August, 1951 the first report of the progress showed that $14,919.00 had been collected. Founders' certificates were available to anyone a contributing a minimum of $50.00. (3)
LUTHER MANOR, an outgrowth of the Martin Luther Home for the Aged, was sold in 1968.
