MARIO'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE. (1298 Main) Tonio Mario and Angelina Bertolini left Mescara, Italy and moved to Dubuque by way of New York. They opened Mario's at 13th and Main Street in 1977.
Although offering a wide variety of foods, Mario's was known for years as the "Home of the Panzeratti," a delicious baked specialty.
In 2001 Mario's daughter Lidia developed a wine menu that became one of only three Iowa restaurants named outstanding by Wine Spectator Magazine. The restaurant was still open in 2025.
