HOELSCHER, Larry
HOELSCHER, Larry. (Iowa Falls, IA- ). An industrial arts teacher at STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL, Hoelscher compiled one of the longest records of service to the DUBUQUE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION. He served six years as its vice-president, twelve years as a building representative, and was chairperson on several occasions of its teacher rights and negotiations committees. He was repeatedly an elected representative to its state and national conventions.
Hoelscher also served as moderator, search committee member, and chairperson of the Buildings and Ground Committee and chairman of deacons for SUMMIT CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST. (1) He was a member of a "Blue Ribbon Task Force" in 1994 organized by the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT to considered the district's future needs and how to find the money to address them. (2) In 1996 he was re-elected to the board of directors of the DUBUQUE AREA LABOR-MANAGEMENT COUNCIL. (3) In 1997 he was serving as the president of the Iowa Industrial Technology Education Association. (4)
Innovation was a priority in his teaching. In 1990 students in an engineering drafting and design class taught by Hoelscher designed and constructed mousetrap-powered vehicles. The winning vehicle traveled 48 feet-6 inches, about four inches more than its nearest competitor. (5) In 1997 students at Hempstead with their vehicle "The Predator" were the first locally to qualify for the national Electrathon, a race designed to test the speed and efficiency of student-built, battery-operated vehicles. The team members were students of Hoelscher in his engineering concepts class. (See: EXPERIMENTAL AUTOMOBILE RACING.
