HARTIG, Albert J.
HARTIG, Albert J. (Dubuque, IA, July 15, 1882--Dubuque, IA, June 29, 1964). A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy in 1903, Hartig returned to Dubuque the following year and became a manager of the T. W. RUETE DRUG COMPANY at First and Locust STREETS. (1)
Hartig bought the company in 1904 and began the chain of HARTIG DRUG COMPANY stores which included sites in East Dubuque (1912); Dubuque, Oelwein, Iowa (1953); Galena, Illinois (1975); and Dyersville (1985). (2) An entreprenuer, he expanded the corner drugstore concept into one which sold games, toys, food and fishing tackle. He also hired his sister Olga HARTIG, a pharmacy school graduate and one of the first female pharmacists in Iowa. (3)
Hartig was responsible for the publication of the HEALTH HERALD. (4) He was the president of the Iowa Veteran Pharmacists Association for many years. (5)
Hartig was instrumental in the development of the Grandview Tourist Park which became known as GRANDVIEW PARK and later MURPHY PARK. (6) He was also the driving force behind the establishment locally of a BASS RANCH.
