EGELHOF COTTAGE
EGELHOF COTTAGE. A log cabin dating back to 1841 was constructed along Fentress Lake near East Dubuque, Illinois. The cabin was later purchased by Frederick Louis EGELHOF and his wife Louise as a summer cottage.
In 2003 the cabin was located on property purchased by Steve Herrig to construct a summer home. To allow construction, the cabin was donated to the Mississippi River Discovery Center by the Eldon HERRIG family. The new acquisition was written into the plans for the educational wetlands in the harbor.
Moving the cabin to its new home was aided by nature. On May 6, 2003 high waters (13 feet) on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER allowed Newt Marine to push a barge close to shore. This allowed Walser Crane Service to transfer the top portion of the cabin to the barge for river transport. The rest of the cabin was mapped out, deconstructed, moved, and reconstructed on the Center's wetlands. The top portion was placed by crane on its original base.
Eldon Herrig presented two checks from his son Steve and himself to the Discovery Center totaling $13,000 to help defray costs of moving and renovation of the historic cabin. Herrig also led a drive to raise a total of approximately $60,000 to restore the cabin to the necessary specifications for the museum.
