COUNTY COURT. The county court replaced the PROBATE COURT in Iowa in 1852. The first Dubuque county court judge appointed was William Y. Lovell. He was replaced in August 1855 by Steven HEMPSTEAD who served until this court was abolished in 1868 when legal business was transferred to the circuit court. Accounts against the county were taken by the county auditor, a position created the same year and Judge Hempstead was installed.
