BURDEN, George R. "BILL." (Dubuque, IA, June 15, 1899-Dubuque, IA, Feb. 28, 1974). The son of George A. BURDEN and Viola (Rider) Burden, George Rider Burden married Elizabeth Adams, the daughter of John Taylor ADAMS. Upon her death, FOUR MOUNDS, the 54-acre estate was left to the City of Dubuque with the only requirement being that the land be used as a park. The land is now leased to the Four Mounds Foundation.
Burden owned considerable property in Dubuque including land which became the parking lot for FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE of which he was a director. He built the first mall building in TOWN CLOCK PLAZA, served as secretary-treasurer and director of DUBUQUE THRIFT PLAN, and was a director of the SPAHN AND ROSE LUMBER COMPANY and CARADCO.
Burden counted among his friends everyone from the cream of Dubuque society to a Wisconsin fishing guide and friend he brought to Four Mounds in the man's last stages of terminal illness. Burden was the author of The Wandering Gastronaut later distributed through the DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
