BERWANGER BOILER & BLACKSMITH SHOP
BERWANGER BOILER & BLACKSMITH SHOP. A supplier of boilers, smokestacks, and blacksmithing equipment, the FRANK BERWANGER BOILER & BLACKSMITH SHOP was started in 1929 by Frank Berwanger after he was laid off at the MILWAUKEE RAILROAD SHOPS.
In 1951 the company expanded its business through the purchase of Midwest Lumber Company's heating division. The firm operated within a 150-mile radius of Dubuque and installed the boilers in many of the area's colleges and factories. The name was changed to Berwanger Boiler Shop Inc.
The company was first located at 13th Street and Central Avenue, then 535 Central in the 1960s, and finally at 2240 Kerper Boulevard around 1970.
In September 1988, Berwanger Heating Specialists, prior to a planned move to Wisconsin, was closed by Charles Berwanger and the equipment was sold.
