ADAPTIVE-SPORTS PROGRAM
ADAPTIVE-SPORTS PROGRAM. An open gym program for people of all ages with physical disabilities who might not fit into Special Olympics or were unable to play regular organized sports was announced for the fall of 2015. The program was initiated by Aulanda Krause who volunteered with SportAbility of Iowa Adapted Sports Camp at the University of Northern Iowa. She was joined in the effort by the City of Dubuque's Leisure Services Department's program supervisor, Janna Beau. Beau's role would be to work with the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT to find gym space. (1)
A new sport such as wheelchair basketball would be featured each month in a non-competitive environment. The activity was offered free of charge. It was expected that some of the equipment would be borrowed from the University of Northern Iowa. (2)
