A. TREDWAY AND SONS. A. Tredway and Sons was the first hardware wholesaler west of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER when it was started in 1853 by Alfred TREDWAY. Salesmen of the company traveled throughout Iowa and parts of Illinois, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Nebraska selling merchandise.

In 1929 the company was purchased and became KRETSCHMER-TREDWAY COMPANY. The merger allowed the expansion of the company from selling case iron heating stoves and wagon hardware into plumbing, heating, air conditioning and hardware.


The 1878-79 Dubuque City Directory listed 484-488 Main.

According to the 1880 and 1883 Dubuque City Directory, this business was located at 488 Main.

The 1884-1885 and 1886-87 Dubuque City Directory listed 484-488 Main as the address.

The 1890-91 through 1899-1900 Dubuque City Directory listed 465-471 Iowa.
