BATTLE BOWS. Winning design in the national competition for the Tri-State Veterans Memorial. The design was the creation of sculptors Saunders Schultz and William Severson of St. Louis, Missouri, and architect Thomas Nesbit of Madison, Wisconsin. The seven-member panel of professional judges that selected the design was chaired by Wayne NORMAN. Nesbit received ten thousand dollars for his entry.

Constructed about twenty-four feet high, Battle Bows consists of four stainless steel semi-arches. Three of the arches, designed in plain polished steel, circle a fourth laminated with colored metal bands depicting campaign ribbons from wars beginning with the REVOLUTIONARY WAR to the VIETNAM WAR.

The monument was erected by the Tri-State Veterans Memorial Association, a non-profit organization representing all branches of the armed services, in the Arboretum at Marshall Park. A goal was established of raising $300,000 for the project that was headed by Harold Meloy, Navy veteran and past commander of Dubuque Post No. 6 of the American Legion.
