BYRNE, Thomas Edward. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 6, 1890—Dubuque, IA, April 14, 1958). Byrne worked on such building projects as street paving, house foundations, curbs and sidewalks, sewer and water pipelines. Among his most notable projects were the Martin Oil gas station at 4th and Locust, running track at Loras College’s Rock Bowl, irst factory building for the Ertl Toy Company, and the ski jump near FOUR MOUNDS. He was Post Commander of the American Legion in 1922 and was appointed Street Commissioner in 1932.

His four sons were William J. BYRNE, Thomas (a retired teacher), John (a West Point graduate and attorney), and author Robert BYRNE. All four attended St. Columbkille’s grade school and high school and became college graduates.
