PRENDERGAST, Clare. (Alliance, NB, Aug. 27, 1903--Dubuque, IA, Oct. 2, 1976). Prendergast became the first state champion in Class B golf when she scored a total of 1,465 in 1939. (1) She was once runner-up in the women's city golf tournament.

Prendergast began her teaching career in Parnell, Iowa. She was there one year before moving to Dubuque. She taught home economics at CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL AND JEFFERSON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL until 1949. She then moved to DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL as the department chairperson. In 1932 the combined cooking school classes under her direction prepared dinners for classes of students. (2) When STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL opened in 1970, she moved there as the department chairperson for the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. She retired in 1971 as supervisor of home economics. (3)

Her sister, Honore, was married to actor Don AMECHE.
