SCOTT, John G. (Washington Co., PA, Sept. 14, 1830--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 23, 1890). Beginning in 1856 Scott served on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER as an engineer for the Minnesota Packet Company. He was a chief engineer of the Mississippi squadron during the CIVIL WAR. After the war, Scott was the chief engineer of the "Diamond Joe" Line between 1869 and 1878.

Scott was appointed a steamboat inspector in July 1878, over an area larger than any other district in the nation.
