LEWIS-ADAMS HOUSE. Located at 325 Alpine, the house originally belonged to General Warner Lewis who had the home constructed in 1854. Lewis arrived in Dubuque in 1833 and was appointed surveyor general of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota by presidents Polk, Pierce, and Buchanan. He was elected a representative of Dubuque County to the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature and later served in the Iowa Legislature. Although the architect is not known, the house was originally constructed in FEDERAL STYLE. The ITALIAN VILLA ARCHITECTURE cupola and the bracketed eaves and bay windows were not added until after 1900 by John T. ADAMS.
