LEWIS-ADAMS HOUSE. Located at 325 Alpine, the house originally belonged to General Warner LEWIS who had the home constructed in 1854. Lewis arrived in Dubuque in 1833 and was appointed surveyor general of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota by presidents Polk, Pierce, and Buchanan. He was elected a representative of Dubuque County to the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature and later served in the Iowa Legislature. Although the architect is not known, the house was originally constructed in FEDERAL STYLE ARCHITECTURE.

In 1866 the house became property of the Adams family. The "Judge Adams House" reflected the ownership of Austin ADAMS. Herbert Adams, Austin's son, with his brother Eugene ADAMS operated the ADAMS COMPANY (Encyclopedia Dubuque).
