BURDEN, George R. "BILL." (Dubuque, IA, June 15, 1899-Dubuque, IA, Feb. 28, 1974). Last owner of FOUR MOUNDS. Burden married Elizabeth Adams, the daughter of John Taylor ADAMS. Upon her death, the 54-acre estate was left to the City of Dubuque with the only requirement being that the land be used as a park. The land is now leased to the Four Mounds Foundation.
Burden owned considerable property in Dubuque including land that is now the parking lot for FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE of which he was a director. He built the first mall building in TOWN CLOCK PLAZA. This office building is now owned by First National Bank. Burden counted among his friends everyone from the cream of Dubuque society to a Wisconsin fishing guide and friend he brought to Four Mounds in the man's last stages of terminal illness. Burden was the author of The Wandering Gastronaut later distributed through the DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
