WINTER, Ethel M. (Guttenberg, IA, Dec. 8, 1900--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 30, 1993). Dubuque's first Gold Star Mother of WORLD WAR II. Winter's son, Gerald, was the first Dubuque resident to die in World War II during the June 1942 bombing of England. The Gerald F. Winter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post was named in his honor.

Ethel Winter, a volunteer in many civic organizations, received the Sertoma Services for Mankind Award, American Cancer Society's Most Outstanding Retired Senior Volunteer Award for her decade of service, and the Certificate of Recognition from the Project Concern Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
