NORMAN, Wayne Albert
NORMAN, Wayne Albert. (Winthrop, IA, 1887--Dubuque, IA, 1938). Vice-president and general manager of CARR, RYDER, AND ADAMS. Norman, an executive at Carr, Ryder, & Adams Company at the time of his death, was a founder of the Dubuque Thrift Plan which was established in the depths of the Great Depression to make funds available to local businesses. He served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, DUBUQUE BUILDING AND LOAN ASSOCIATION (later HARVEST SAVINGS BANK), and the Manufacturers and Wholesalers Bureau.
Norman came alone to Dubuque at the age of seven to live with the family of Rev. G. M. Orvis, pastor of SUMMIT CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST. He attended Grinnell College and taught school in South Dakota before returning to Dubuque to work for John Taylor ADAMS who met him at the train upon his arrival. Norman was the father of Wayne Andrew NORMAN, Sr. and grandfather of Wayne A. NORMAN, Jr.
