DOGS FOR DEFENSE. During WORLD WAR II, dogs were needed for sentry duty. "Duchess," a two-year old Doberman pinscher, belonging to John ARMSTRONG and his wife, was the first Dubuque dog to be volunteered for this duty. In 1942 the dog was taken to Davenport for its training.
