HONKAMP, Arnold N.
HONKAMP, Arnold N. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 6, 1939--Iowa City, IA, Jan. 4, 2014). The son of Arnold HONKAMP, Sr. and Catherine (Portzen)Honkamp, Arnold graduated from LORAS ACADEMY in 1958 before attending the University of Iowa. He graduated from the university in 1962 with a marketing degree and LORAS COLLEGE in 1963 with a degree in accounting.
Honkamp joined the JOHN W. LAW COMPANY in 1972 and by 1974 was the majority stockholder. In 1985 the name of the firm became Honkamp-Krueger & Company PC. which in 2013 was a Top 100 CPA firm in the nation. Honkamp later was involved in the establishment of Honkamp Krueger Financial Services Inc. and HK Payroll Services Inc. He retired in 2009 and held the title of CEO emeritus.
His community service included being president of the Dubuque Jaycees and the DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, membership on the Airport and Planning and Zoning commissions, and contributions to the DUBUQUE RACING ASSOCIATION (specifically handling its finances). He was instrumental in the creation of the DUBUQUE GREYHOUND PARK AND CASINO. Honkamp was a parish director and finance committee chairman of ST. COLUMBKILLE CATHOLIC CHURCH; member of the board of directors at AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK, United Way, JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRI-STATES INC. and AREA RESIDENTIAL CARE, INC. He served on the finance committees of the ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE and WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL and the boards of the Holy Family Catholic Schools and the State Flood Mitigation Board.
Honkamp was twice the recipient of the FIRST CITIZEN AWARD from the TELEGRAPH HERALD, once for his personal achievements and another as a member of the DUBUQUE RACING ASSOCIATION. He began a long career in public service by joining the JAYCEES in 1969. For his role as finance committee chairman for the Dubuque County Empowerment Board, Honkamp received the Iowa Governor's Award for early childhood care and education. He also served on the board of the Iowa Department of Human Services.
In 2012, Mr. and Mrs. Honkamp gave a gift of $750,000 to Loras College in honor of their daughter Heidi Anne Honkamp-Myhre who died of cancer. Endowed scholarships from the fund are awarded to fine arts students with financial need.
