Heisman Trophy

HEISMAN TROPHY. Award presented annually to the outstanding college football player in the United States. Named for John W. Heisman, athletic director of New York City's Downtown Athletic Club (D.A.C.), the first trophy was presented to Dubuque's Jay BERWANGER as the D.A.C. Trophy on December 9,1935.

In his research for his book on Berwanger, Brian Cooper found that the famous trophy was created by Frank Eliscu who in the summer of 1935 used New York University's Ed Smith as his model.

The prize was renamed the Heisman Memorial Trophy a year later on October 3, 1936.
