SYMBOL. Bicentennial design. In 1974 Dubuque became the only Iowa city to have a bicentennial symbol. The design was created through a contest sponsored by the Dubuque JAYCEES.

James R. McMahon, a student at WAHLERT HIGH SCHOOL, won the contest with his red, white, and blue symbol entitled "Dubuque: A Bicentennial City" illustrating the JULIEN DUBUQUE BRIDGE and monument with a rising sun. McMahon won $200. The design was planned for use on all city stationery, billboards, and promotional items.
