CHOQUET, Marianne
CHOQUET, Marianne (Marianne Geralyn Hoerner). (Dubuque, IA, Oct. 1, 1963-- ). Marianne is the daughter of Robert J. "Bob" HOERNER and Millie (Frederick) Hoerner (Dubuque, IA, Nov. 14, 1926--). She is a niece of Joseph HOERNER, second cousin of Lester Adam "Dick" HOERNER and C. Michael "Mike" REILLY, and great-granddaughter of Emma (Goffinet) HOERNER. (1)
She traveled to New York in the early 1980s and found work as a model. (2) Returning to Iowa, Marianne obtained a BA in English Literature from the University of Iowa and then studied acting. (3) She returned to modeling for awhile and on a job in Japan met her future husband, Jean-Michael Choquet (Paris, France, June 30, 1951-- ). They married in Olivet, France on April 17, 1996. Their son, Yancy Raphaël Choquet was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 13, 1997. (4)
Despite pressures of her work, Marianne continued her education. She attended the Ted Liss Acting Studios in Chicago (1986-87); Shay Acting School, Atlanta, Georgia (1996); and the Actor's Workshop in Barcelona, Spain (2005). (5) While abroad, Marianne acquired a Certificate de Langue Française from the University of Paris-Sorbonne and an MA (2008) and PhD (2013) in Literature and Cultural Studies from the University of Barcelona. Marianne acted in four films including "The Untouchables" with Sean Connery and Kevin Costner. She appeared in three television programs including "Crime Story." Her commercial advertisements have included products from such companies as Honda, Chrysler, Ford, BMW, Coca Cola, Siemens, Nescafe', Panasonic, and Ponds among many others. With the Ted Liss Studios, she played "Blanche" in A Streetcar Named Desire, "Martha Dobie" in The Children's Hour, "Guildenstern" in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. (7)
Throughout her life, she has also found time to study and enjoy writing. Speaking English, French, Spanish, and translating from Catalan, she has worked for The Iowa Review, (editorial assistant, 1985) Dino De Laurentiis films (writer of synopsis of novels for films being considered, 1986) , The Yomiuri Shimbun (assistant to the regional editor, 1987-1989), Metro magazine in Chicago (editor, 1987-1988), and The Barcelona Review(reader, 2005-2006). (8) She has participated in three nationally renowned U.S. writing programs: the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference in California, and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Vermont. She has also assisted and participated in A Creativity Workshop in Barcelona and Paris. (9) Marianne writes fiction and non-fiction; her scholarly work has been published in Canada and Spain.(10)
Marianne has taught at the University of Barcelona, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Barcelona Study Center, the well-renowned Writing School (Escola d’Escriptura) at the Ateneu Barcelonès, UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE, and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. (11) In May 2007, and June 2009, she was awarded an International Mobility Scholarship by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture. With a grant from the Center for Women and Literature at the University of Barcelona in October 2008, she was a Visiting Scholar at the prestigious International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. (12) She has also been an Erasmus Distinguished Foreign Visitor at the Josef Skvorecky Literary Academy in Prague, Czech Republic. (13) In April 2009, she created, directed, and taught a pilot writing workshop - Creating Writing: On Being Foreign - to University of California-Illinois Education Abroad Program students at the University of Barcelona. She later taught it as a semester-long academic course at the CIEE Barcelona Study Center. (14)
