MILITANT ORDER OF SPARTAN KNIGHTS. Organization begun in 1934 by Frederick Wilhelm KALTENBACH. Boys who joined the organization participated in boxing at the YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.), picnics, and marksmanship practice with .22 caliber rifles.

Parental concern with Kaltenbach, a pro-Nazi who demanded that the boys wear brown shirts, led to his dismissal from the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT and eventual move to Germany.
