The dairy business lasted for one year. Cushing moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and began his own vinegar works, but due to ill health returned in two years to Dubuque. In December, 1886, he opened the NORTH STAR LIVERY STABLE.

In 1891 Cushing was elected as an independent as an alderman representing the Third Ward. In 1893 he opened an undertaking establishment. He sold his livery business to the NOONAN BROTHERS in June 1894. (1)
