The first electrified streetcars were seen in Dubuque in the spring of 1890. The height of the business came in 1916 when there were 85 cars and twenty trailers in service.

The popularity of automobiles, however, cut deeply into the interest in public transportation. On July 19, 1925 four buses were purchased to increase ridership. Streetcar service ended in December, 1932 to be replaced by bus transportation.
