HEISMAN TROPHY. The award presented annually to the outstanding college football player in the United States, the trophy was named for John W. Heisman, athletic director of New York City's Downtown Athletic Club (D.A.C.). The first John W. Heisman Trophy was presented to Dubuque's Jay BERWANGER as the D.A.C. Trophy on December 9,1935.
