BEWER, Matthias. (Germany, June 18, 1823-- ). Dealer in dry goods and notions, corner Iowa and Twelfth STREETS. Bewer came to Dubuque on June 18, 1848. He began working at his trade of stone mason and continued until 1857.

Bewer entered the dry-goods house of John Bell & Co. in 1859 and was with that firm fourteen years. He then opened his own business. He was one of the founders of the Pius Society and also belonged to the Mutual Life Insurance Company and served as its treasurer for fourteen years.
