ZUMHOF, George. (Hanover, Germany, Jan. 9, 1821--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 6, 1908). Zumhof came to Dubuque on April 24, 1847 and began a series of careers that started with a bakery at the corner of Fifth and Main.
He continued this until 1853 when he built the MISSISSIPPI HOUSE on White Street between Fifth and Sixth STREETS. He entered into a variety of business ventures between 1862 and 1881 including ice packing. In 1863 his sauerkraut business led him to be able to ship 254 barrels to New York markets. (1)
