Altman purchased the [[HARMONY HALL]], a hotel and one of Dubuque's most prominent buildings and renamed it the [[ALTMAN HOUSE]]. He remained in the hotel business until 1888 when he retired to be a contractor. He also served as an alderman for the Third Ward for three consecutive terms around 1878-1880.
