From 1972-1975 he was a teacher at St. Joseph Key West School. From then until 1982 he was the principal at St. Patrick's School. Beginning in 1982 and ending in 1997 he was the principal at St. Joseph the Worker School. He served as the principal at Resurrection Elementary School from 1997 to 2003 when he became the principal at Seton Catholic School in western Dubuque County. Cornelius was the chief administrator of Holy Family until 2010 when he announced his retirement for July 1, 2011.
